Part 2
1,131 words
It was calm outside 2nd division headquarters. The sun was just barely over the horizon, and the air was still cool. Shoushi could hear birds chirping around the courtyard. The flowers smelled nice as well. It was nice to be outside. Shoushi didn’t get outside much what with all the paperwork in the library he was stuck with. He looked forward to his trip to Rukongai. He hasn’t left the crimson court for almost a year it seamed. Birds and flowers were quite an upgrade from shelves and shelves of dusty books.
“Hey Fukushuushin-kun!” He turned and saw Rakuchi Taigi running towards him.
“You finally got here Taigi-sensei.” He replied, “I thought you’d never show!”
“Alright, lets go, and for this mission you can just call me Rakuchi, ok Shoshi?”
Shoushi nodded his head, and the two took off towards the western gate.
Outside the gate Rukongai was nice an peaceful. The two shinigami were jogging through the district. Shoushi could see the citizens staring at them. They probably didn’t see shinigami every day.
“Ok,” Rakuchi said, “We’re going to the 30th district, that’s where our source is. We’re going to interview him and see if we can figure out where to go from there.”
The two of them ran off towards 30th district.
--
In the 30th district of Rukongai the buildings weren’t quite as well kept as they were in the first few districts. They also weren’t too bad, people there were mostly peaceful. A few incidents happen around there, but the citizens there are mostly kind towards each other.
An old man was walking down the main road carrying a basket full of bread. He was carrying the basket with one hand, while his other was using the cane that he leaned on while walking. Two men were watching him walk down the street from behind a tree.
“I’m hungry bro,” the taller one said to the other.
“We aint got any money big guy, so how we gonna eat?”
“I don’t know, we could just take that old man’s bread right there. That’d be easy!”
“Yeah, but I’m sure we’d be chased again, I’m so tired of run’n away from people.”
“Look at ‘m he’s so old, I bet we’d get away fast.”
“Fine, lets go get him.”
The two waited till he was just a little ways out of town, so they wouldn’t have anyone else trying to stop them. When the moment was right they ran up to him. The tall one ran right up in front of him, and yelled, “Boo!” while the other one was standing behind him. The old man was startled, and jumped back. The shorter one grabbed his sholders.
“Give us ya bread old man!” the shorter one said from behind.
“No! This is my bread! You two young’ns should get your own!” he replied, and then he raised his cane and jabbed the tall man in the foot. The taller man jumped and grabbed his foot wincing in pain. Then he took his cane by the middle, and swung it downwards jabbing the shorter man in the stomach. That man let go of him and fell down to the ground, curled up in a ball, and grabbed his stomach. The old man smiled and kept hobbling down the road.
“Hey! Just who do you think you are old man?!” the tall one said, “I’m going to get you now!” He let go of his foot and half limp ran up to him and pushed him down. The other man got up from the ground now running up to him hunched over still holding his stomach with one hand. The two of them grabbed his basket of bread and took off running away from town.
“Stop you two!” the old man yelled at them as they were running away. The two men turned around now running backwards, and made rude gestures towards the man laying on the ground. They were laughing to each other as they did this. And then, Bam!
The taller of the two fell two the found dazed, while the other stopped, and turned around. Standing in front of him was a man smiling holding out a sword.
Rakuchi looked at them and smiled. The taller man had the unfortunate luck of getting struck by the end of his zanpakuto’s hilt. “You guys really should look where you’re going.” he said to them still smiling, “You could get hurt being so careful, right Shoushi?”
The shorter man just now noticed the other man standing behind him. He had a mask on, and was dressed the same. What kind of monsters are these men? he thought to himself, They look like Shinigami, but there’s been no shinigami here for a long time. In fact the only reason he knew what shinigami looked like were from stories he’s heard.
Shoushi looked at the two, and saw the old man down the road slowly getting up. He walked up the man still standing, and asked, “Did you two gentlemen steal that man’s bread?” The man before him just shook with his eyes and mouth open in fear of him. Shoushi looked past him and saw the old man again. He fell back down again, and moaned in pain. Shoushi held his zanpakuto still sheathed, and leaned towards the man. He asked him again, this time win a slightly controlled anger, “Did you push that man to the ground” He pulled his sword out slowly and glared at him through his mask. The shorter man could see his eyes through the mask almost burning with intensity. The taller man had sat up now and was also noticing the seriousness of the situation. The four of them just sat there for a couple seconds in silence. Shoushi yelled now lifting up his sword high in the air, “How can we rectify these action?!”
The two men looked at each other, and then back at Shoushi. Then they both jumped up, and ran back to the man yelling, “I’m sorry!” “We didn’t mean it!” “Honestly!” They ran up to the old man, helped him up, and gave him his basket. The shorter man said to him, “There you are all better right? Ok, we’ll be on our way now!” and the two ran off the path, away from the town, and away from the two shinigami.
Rakuchi laughed and put his hand on Shoushi’s shoulder as Shoushi put his zanpakuto away. “Who knew a visit to Rukongai would be so fun, eh?” Shoushi didn’t respond to that, but walked over to the old man barely standing.
“Hello old man, can we help you?” he asked him. The man thanked them, and then the two shinigami escorted him to his house down the road.
