Name: Lumen Latonesh

Gender: Male

Age:
Age at human death: 21
Total age currently: 49
How old he appears: 24

Appearance: Lumen Latonesh is an exceptionally big man, standing at a whopping six feet six inches, and towering over most with ease. He is also very well muscled, his arms bulging against his clothing and his hands knotted from training with a blade. His eyes are what you call “prismatic”, or able to change their color. While they are deep steel blue when the weather is clear, if a storm is brewing or if Lumen is in battle they turn a dark gold color, and seem to glow gently. His nose is angular and rigid, while he has high cheek bones and a heavy brow. He has a slight over-bite that is matched with a slightly large lower lip, matching up perfectly.

Lumen wears his Shinigami uniform proudly, and keeps it in perfect condition, although he isn't one of those to go and change his clothes after a fight. He has also made some slight modifications to his clothing, mostly hidden pockets on the inside to keep various medicines hidden. Under his Shinigami uniform Lumen wears comfortable, orange clothing, namely some loose linen pants and a tank-top shirt. Lumen wears his hair back in a top-knot, a type of pony-tail that is much higher on the skull. His hair is a vibrant orange color, like the sun just beginning to set on a clear day. His skin also seems to have a slight orange color to it, although most people would refer to it as “bronzed”. Lumen for some reason does not wear the common footwear that Shinigami wear. Instead he has a pair of light leather boots with pieces of spirit-infused steel in the soles, helping him deflect blades with his feet. A Zanpakutou sheath rests on his back, the hilt on the left side, hinting at Lumen being left-handed.

Personality:Thoughtful. A person is more likely to see a look of thought on Lumen's face than a smile. Lumen is one of those people who doesn't seem to get along well with certain people, particularly those who are less intelligent than him. With an IQ of one-hundred-forty-eight, or 148, this means that he does not often get along with people. Although it can be noted that the few people he does manage to get along with are younger than him, and Lumen is great with kids because he listens to them. Despite his intelligence Lumen is an optimist through and through, always looking at the world in a glass half full attitude. If there is a problem, he goes about trying to fix it, rather than moaning or getting angry about it.

Anarchist. Lumen also seems to have a bit of an issue with society, having an operation to make his ears look like an elf's ears just to seem different while he was alive. Lumen is also slightly out of sync with the norm of society, doing things that are strange without even thinking about it (Such as drinking tabasco sauce from the bottle when thirsty, or gnawing on a piece of wood absentmindedly). He gets a laugh out of people's reactions to his strangeness, and will often do even stranger things when people are around. Lumen says he doesn't have a clue as to why he acts so strange sometimes, and “chalks” it up to just being a balance for his intelligence. Actually Lumen uses it to cover up his lack of social skills, for although he has good looks and intelligence, he never was very good with speaking with people. This is perhaps one of the reasons why he cannot put up with people who are less intelligent than him.

Adaptive. Lumen has a very unique way of viewing what has happened to him. With the discovery of the spiritual world, he is instead of being scared, very excited about the fact that he can fight hollows, which he views as demons and abominations. He uses his unique view to be a steady rock for those around him, supporting them as best he can. While he is normally a shy person, in battle his entire personality seems to change, like a Vizard losing control of their inner hollow. He becomes very outgoing, often talking to his opponent as if they were at a party rather than fighting each other. He also gains a sense of blood lust, rushing into the fight with the pure ecstasy of a man doing what he has always wanted to do his whole life.

Biography: Lumen originally found himself to the far West of the Kurenai Seireitei, in the 97th Zaraki District, one of the most barbaric places in Soul Society. This suited Lumen just fine, as he was much better at fighting than holding a conversation. Yet despite the tendency for him to find himself surrounded by half a dozen brawlers trying to kill him for no other reason than to kill, Lumen remained a very calm and enlightened being. This helped him stay alive, and it helped him to eventually realize that he needed to get away from the place he was in. So several years after he had arrived in Soul Society he set out to the East, intending to head towards the more civilized districts.

As he made his ways through Rukongai towards Kurenai Seireitei, he began thinking of a memory he had from when he was a human. This one memory that he possessed was simply of him looking into the sun, seemingly taking the sunlight in with a smile on his face, and then something happening. He began to wonder if he had a family back in the real world, and determined that he should find a way to get back to the human world so that he could find out. This desire made Lumen want to join the Shinigami, as they could easily pass between the human world and Soul Society. He made his way to the Kurenai Seireitei, until eventually he saw the stone walls that surrounded it, towering high into the air. By this time Lumen had been in Rukongai a little over two decades, remarkably young to hope to enter the Academy.

He immediately signed up to join the Daikokubashira Academy. His exam to get into the Academy could not have gone better, with his previous battle experience and high intelligence he easily passed. He was then rewarded by being put in the First Class. He studied hard, mostly staying away from the other students and concentrating on getting stronger. It paid off, for six years later he passed the Graduate Exam at the top of his class in Zanjutsu and Hakudo, with his Hohou middling and his Kidou his poorest ability. Now he is prepared to enter the Saishuu Gotei 13 and begin the search for his family in the human world.

Division applying to: Sixth Division

Zanpakutou appearance: Lumen's Zanpakutou looks more like a nodachi than a katana. The blade is almost five feet long (58 in), and seems to catch the light in strange ways, shining brightly even when there is very little light. The guard is a white metal disk designed to look like a sun. The grip is black and white, alternating along it's in a simple pattern. The guard and grip give off a slight phosphorous glow. Lumen sheathes it on his back due to it's size.

Lumen's fighting style is very brutal and to the point, there is no extra flash, just an animalistic fury unleashed with glee. The idea is to overwhelm the opponent with a barrage of strong attacks, eroding their defense and morale until they collapse. He combines Zanjutsu and Hakudo in a unique way, using his sword to block and parry to get in close, and then grabbing the opponent and slamming them into the ground with bone-breaking force. However, he doesn't fight with just instinct. For despite his rather bestial attacks, he has a keen mind that is always looking for opening or thinking of ways to trap and snare his opponent.

Sample mission:

The sun rode high in the sky, with no clouds in sight to blemish the clear blue of the day. Sunlight illuminated the sea of bright green grass that slowly swayed in a gentle breeze. In the distance on all sides a forest could be seen expanding into the horizon, the green of the evergreens mixing with the orange and reds and browns of the falling leaves. A single oak tree stood strong and tall upon a hill, the leaves scraping together to make a soothing whisk sound. In the branches of the oak a lone bird chirped out it's merry song, creating a melody that strangely mixed with the rhythm of the leaves to form a song that tugged at the soul. Under this tree was a blanket, spread out wide and half-covered with fallen leaves.

A single person lay sprawled across the blanket as if asleep, the leaves half-burying it's quiet form. It was a man, a very large and muscular man. His huge chest slowly rose and fell, giving hint to any curious animal that he yet lived. Despite this, a squirrel was placed upon his chest, it's small gleaming eyes taking in the oddity that was this human. Sunset orange hair was strewn about his head, his nose was rigid and strong, the cheek bones sat high on his face, his jaw added a sense of fierceness to the otherwise peaceful look, and the man's ears were pointed. The squirrel thought the creature was very strange and ugly, and scampered off to search for any fallen acorns it might come across.

Suddenly the human began to stir, until finally he sat up, his eyes opening to take in his peaceful surroundings. His eyes were a deep steely blue, and intelligence sat behind them in the man. Looking around in a bemused fashion, he finally stood. The words of a question died on his lips as he finally realized where he was. He was at his favorite place in the whole world. He would come here with...with...with who? He couldn't remember who he came here with. It was as if a great thick fog clouded his memory. Fog. The man's mind attached to this thought, attempting to find meaning in the word. The meaning wouldn't come, the man's thought could no longer find a meaning. Suddenly words meant nothing, his thoughts came only as pictures and sounds with no meaning.

The sky began to change as if in response, a single cloud racing impossibly fast across the horizons. Soon it was followed with more and more clouds, each darker than the last. The sun was swallowed behind the mass of clouds that sped across the sky, choking out the bright sunlight that had shone down on the man. Looking up with fear, his eyes had turned from the deep steely blue to a burnished gold. It began to rain, spitting at first, but quickly turning into a full force rainstorm, the wind howling across the sea of grass as if alive and baleful. The man lost his footing in the gale, and fell to the ground yet attempting still to look at the sky, as if he could see the sun through the clouds.

Faster than it had come the rain and clouds suddenly left, gone in the blink of an eye. The sun was shining, the wind was gently and caressing, and not a leaf was missing from the oak tree. It was as if the storm had vanished. Not only that it vanished, but that it had never happened in the first place. The man picked himself off the ground, looking around confusedly as his thoughts began to reform their structure. What just happened? Why am I here? were the first thoughts that managed to come to the man's mind.

Abruptly, with no warning or even a sound, a blade seemed to rip through the air. Behind it came a...set of doors. The doors formed quickly, two skeletons adorning each each door and facing towards each other. They opened slowly to reveal a dark red light emanating from within. The man didn't understand what was going on, but he knew that he was suddenly struck with a fear so deep he couldn't move. A huge clawed hand reached forth from inside the set of doors, an insane laughter screeching on the inside of the man's skull. He cowered and huddled, hoping that that place wasn't for him.

His wish was granted, for as the man looked on, paralyzed with fear, the hand grabbed something else. A squirrel, crying out in mortal terror as the hand snatched it up and dragged it into the doors. The doors snapped shut in an instant, and as soon as it was closed the door began to crack and break up. Soon it broke into tiny motes of light, and they to were soon gone. Breathing a heavy sigh of relief, the man turned away. There was a sudden pain on the man's forehead, he looked up. And he saw Death personified. Deep billowing black robes and a human skull with eyes leered down at him. Suddenly the world began to darken again, and this time the man knew it was for him. He was going to die, he was going to Hel...

Lumen awoke, clenching back a scream that wanted to escape from his lips and sitting bolt upright in his bed. The same dream again, just like all the other times before. No, this time was different. He had remembered a lot more this time than last, a lot of good it did him. The same dream played in his head dozens and dozens of times, yet Lumen had not been able to make heads or tails of it. And such a strange dream as well, since Lumen couldn't remember ever having been to the place in his dream. With a sigh he flopped back over onto his back. He looked out of the window to see that dawn was fast approaching, as a bit of pink had pushed it's way into the sky. Groaning about having to get out of his comfortable bed, he finally pushed aside the covers and stood. A short walk later and half-an-hour in the showers he was clean and fully dressed.

Four years he had been training here in the Daikokubashira Academy, and he still had two more years before he could take the Graduate Exam. In the time he had been here he had made few friends, and he had made plenty of enemies out of his Zanjutsu training partners. He wasn't there for friends though, he was there to train and get stronger so he could be accepted into one of the Thirteen Squads. And he was only trying to join them to gain the resources to conduct a search for his family. Lumen yawned, it was too early to be heading for class. Lumen looked at his schedule, trying to remind himself where he should be heading. Kidou training was first. Lumen groaned again, Kidou was his worst class. Somehow he just couldn't force his Reiatsu to do the various spells and abilities that were called Kidou. Sighing inwardly, Lumen headed off towards the target range, hoping to get in some practice before the rest of the class arrived. He could use all he could get...

Wow... Just, wow..

You paint extremely vivid pictures with your writing.

There were only a few minor things that I noticed with your application.

First, you're addressing the reader as "you" in your personality section. This could just be me, but I think it would read a little better as saying, "People are more likely to..."

And lastly, your last paragraph...

In the time he had been here he had made few friends, and he had made plenty of enemies out of his Zanjutsu training partners. He wasn't here for friends though, he was here to train and get stronger so he could be accepted into one of the Thirteen Squads.

You switched tenses up a little bit by using "here" instead of "there."

But that's neither here nor there... waits for laughter...

Other than those, your application appears to be flawless. I'll be looking forward to seeing you around the Seireitei soon.

Wow, I didn't realize somebody would like it that much. Hearing the word "flawless" is inflating my ego as we speak (really we type and read but you get the idea)

Changed those two problems, gave it another look over to make sure I didn't do it somewhere else, and I think it is ready.
